A major renewable energy project has officially been launched in Khovd Province, the key development hub of western Mongolia, marking a significant step toward integrating green energy into industrial production.

“KHOVD ECO SOLAR POWER PLANT,” an 8 MW solar energy project implemented by “Western Hold” LLC, a subsidiary of “New Progress Group” LLC, has officially commenced operations. The project was developed to supply the energy demand of the “Khovd Eco Cement” plant internally, improve energy efficiency, and introduce environmentally friendly green technologies into industrial operations.

This project stands out as one of the first large-scale examples of successfully integrating renewable energy into industrial production in western Mongolia, paving the way for a new stage of sustainable and green industrial development in the region.

“Khovd Eco Cement” plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of cement and has created more than 350 jobs, the majority of which are filled by local residents. The plant consumes approximately 18,000 MWh of electricity annually, of which 13,000 MWh can now be supplied through solar renewable energy sources. This serves as a practical example of how renewable energy can be effectively implemented in industrial manufacturing.

Under the Government of Mongolia’s 2024–2028 Action Program and the “New Revival Policy,” increasing renewable energy sources, developing distributed energy systems, and supporting private sector investment have been identified as key priorities. The “KHOVD ECO SOLAR POWER PLANT” project is among the pioneering industrial projects successfully implementing these national objectives in practice.

Developed countries such as Germany, Australia, the United States, and China are leading the world in renewable energy policies, enabling households and businesses to become energy producers. In Australia, for example, one out of every three households in certain regions uses solar energy and generates income by supplying excess electricity back to the central grid — a clear result of effective government policy and flexible regulation.

Mongolia has tremendous solar energy potential, with 260–300 sunny days annually. Industry experts emphasize that with proper policy support, renewable energy projects could not only meet domestic demand but also position Mongolia as a future energy-exporting country.

The “KHOVD ECO SOLAR POWER PLANT” project is a strategically important development that is establishing a new benchmark for innovation, green growth, and sustainable industrial production in western Mongolia.
